Hi, this might sound awkward, but try considering promoting your business via Youtube. I've found this to be highly rewarding...Considering Google now owns Youtube, they kinda 'passively' favour youtube videos in the SERP. Just a line of thought though. It's worked 4 me thus far! Hi there, I am also going to recommend that you as you look into starting a business make sure you select the kind of business entity you want to operate as. If you are consulting in the health care of financial area, most companies now require you to get commercial liability insurance and it is very hard to get that if you are a sole proprietor. Insurance companies also want to see a separate legal entity. It may even be a wise idea to incorporate a company months before you start your actual business simply because lenders like to see that you have an established business entity for 2 years before they lend to you. I would advise you to start by clearly defining your target market- who they are, how many of them exist, is the market growing or shrinking, how can you reach them, etc.   Next, exactly what will you be offering this market- is your service in direct competition with existing service providers? If so, how will you be unique (and better)?   Hopefully this will keep you from the Wal-Mart wannabe trap (trying to be everything to everyone).   Hope that helps. Hi dariuslw. Your post is broad and vague so I'm assuming you are just starting to think about this. I suggest you start writing a business plan. But instead of using the typical business planning software, use a private wiki to easily write your thoughts. You will be brainstorming a lot about how to make this work so you need an easy and quick way to organize your ideas. I also get a lot of ideas when on the road or away from the computer so I use ReQall to save my ideas using my mobile phone. Now beyond the technical, start reading marketing books and blogs. Having your own business means you will be wearing a lot of hats, and you will need more than technical skills. Check out Seth Godin's blog. I never tire of reading Seth's blog.
