i am starting a clothing line based in Sacramento CA. but will be living in hawaii and doing online sales as well. i am wondering the basic legal forms i need. if i have a ficticous name do i need a DBA?? thanks so much
Not that sure about CA - you can check the secretary of state's website - they should have some very detailed information.
In my state - you have to file for a foreign entity if you will not register with the state. This ensure that you are legal to operate there as well as to make sure they get their taxes.

Yes, I'm in California. I know the Dept of State is really cracking down on businesses that operate out of California but haven't formally filed here. You will need to file as a domestic (i.e., California corp), foreign corporation operating in California, or DBA in California with Calif taxes. It doesn't matter where YOU are; it matters where the business is.
