Hey there, Congrats on deciding to stay at home with the kids while contributing to the household cash flow.  My wife did a home daycare for about 10 years when our kids were young.  It was very cool. You definitely need to check with your local laws regarding licensing requirements.  I know in MN it is required, when you take care of x-kids, x-ages, x-etc.  You also have to license your home and your hubby here - in other words, you are going into business, but everything must pass the smell-test to get your license. It sounds onerous, but it's for the good of the kids so it's worth it. Also, there are some tax breaks that you might want to explore with your tax advisor.  I'd hate to give you wrong advice here, since it's been so many years for us. Good luck!  They grow so quickly!

Federal and state agencies do not provide small business grants for starting a business, paying off debt, or to cover operating expenses. However, they do provide low-interest loans, so please make use of our Loans and Grants Tool to find out which loans are available to you. There are federal programs - most grant programs for daycares are very competitive - you might even check with your state and local government to see what programs they have. There are also many subsidized loan programs for daycare facilities. You can look into SBA loans - if you go out and create a waiting list - get parents to sign up for when you do open - you can use that to show the lender that you have a viable business that can service the facility. Well, the first step would be to locate the local\state rules and laws regarding day care in your area; each state and county has different requirements that must be met and followed. In terms of finding clients I would start going to local schools and asking them if you can post a flyer or ad in any newsletters that go out to parents; local grocery store ad boards are a good idea as well.

I did this for five years.  Here is my advice in order of priority before you get started...1) Make sure you love being with kids all day long.  Seriously - all day long.2) Evaluate how your SPOUSE and YOUR KIDS will deal with your divided attention...this was a big issue in our home.3) Do you have plent of room in your home?  Another big issue for us...4) Examine the other BUSINESS aspects.I do hope it works out for you.  The others here have given you a lot of good BUSINESS advice, but I wanted to make sure you understood that in this particular line of work (that IS rewarding at times too), there are special considerations that should not be overlooked.Good luck!
