I wish you the best of luck and I'm sure that you can do it. The only thing which you may have to watch out for (well, probably will) is that people like to sneak in drugs to smoke at these lounges. Therefore, upon hiring employees, I would hire only those who have worked at a hookah lounge because they are going to know the smells and the actions that come up when someone is doing something illegal. Also, they will be able to sniff out when alcohol is sneaked in. It's a lot of work to do this, but if others are successful, you should be as well. Again, hire employees who know the ins and outs of the business. You would hate to get fines or be shut down simply b/c others are abusing. Sincerely, Ken

I'm certainly not going to encourage tobacco usage, however I do have friend who runs a Cigar lounge/shop that does quite well. However, I'll echo what's been said here about navigating the regulations - not only now, but in the future.

I would suggest that you find a local small business development center (SBDC) - these are free to use (part of the SBA). They should know all your local and state regulations.

JanakBhakta,   I would start by speaking with your local municipality first, then I would speak with the state health department.   Although I have seen (and enjoyed) a few hookah bars around my area (I'm in NYC), the laws and regulations regarding smoking indoors can either be a minefield to navigate, a walk in the park or a cold-shouldered 'No'. It really depends on your state, county & local government rules and regulations.   If you plan on alcohol sales, that might complicate things more...but because smoking indoors (flavored or not) is not exactly a popular topic these days, you may need to consult with an experienced attorney that can help you get the necessary variances and approvals for the use.   I hope that helps & good luck to you...
