I am a High School Student passionate about web designing. I am thinking of starting a Web Designing Firm based in Iselin, New Jersey. Can anyone provide me with the steps needed to register a web designing firm and how to maintain the legal procedure. I have a business plan and also have a domain and webspace. All I need is detailed information on how to start a web design firm in NJ provided that I am under 18 and like what are the specific rulers/guidelines and tax conditions for a sole proprietorship.

 

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It's great that you are showing alot of entrepreneurial spirit at such a young age. Being that you already have your infrastructure (website, equipment) in place, I suggest you work as a 1099 freelancer to begin with. This will help you understand the nature of the industry, pay some dues and such.   After you get a few jobs under your belt, and have decided this is definitely the route to go, put some time into finding a good CPA. He or she will be able to advise as to what's best for you (sole proprietorship, LLC or Corp) as well as the financial / tax implication pros and cons of each. At some point, you`ll want to branch out and hire employees or freelancers to leverage your business. I would recommend going for a S Corp LLC structure then.   Hope that helps.

It's not illegal to run a business from home. Technically you should a get a business license from your city. As for a taxes, you will file a schedule C form. However, I would have an accountant do your taxes (to make sure they get done right).

Hi sanke93, Here are the steps to starting a busines in NJ. You can read more about operating requirements and find resources and assistance in our NJ Small Business Guide. Here are the steps to registering a sole proprietorship. Since it will be a online business, make sure you comply with marketing, online sales tax, and other requirements. You are right- home-based businesses have specific zoning requirements, so make sure you comply with NJ zoning regulations.
