forms to apply on their web site. The process takes time and can be expensive
and not all types of businesses qualify, so be sure to check. Once you
receive your 501c3 designation from the IRS, then you can register your
business with your state.

even though I have a for-profit. First, research everything you can before
paying a dime. Second, go to you secretary of state web site or your state
government web site and look up entrepreneur or business start up. Each state
calls it something different. Then review their requirements to establish the
company name and registration.
Also research the IRS requirements for a non-profit.
Lastly, start now to find a lawyer that deals with non-profits and an
accountant.
There's much more than this, but its a good start. Good luck.

Check with your state and see if they would require anything different.
Sometimes charter approvals can take months, but I just spoke with someone
who has gotten hers approved in 45 days.
