If you know the product or service you are seeking to sell - then
Build a website and start promoting your business - that is the basics.
In promoting your business - try to understand your potnetial customers - this way you will better understand your customers - their needs - and where they get their information or shop - then research SEO and put all that knowledge to work.
I would like to know that what kind of business is it?
product selling or services selling.
well you are at right destination in this site that how to start a small online business.
This is a very broad question. My area of expertise is small business telecommunications. Regardless of the type of business you are in, you are going to need a solid business phone system.
Here is a short video on Voice over IP (Hosted VoIP PBX). This technology is now affordable to the small business owner.
Also, here is an article on how Hosted VoIP levels the playing field for small businesses.
I hope this helps,
Regards

My best advice is find something valuable. Research out your prospective customers and create an in-depth business plan to protect yourself from mistakes and ensure it has the possibility to succeed. I am sure it's tough starting a business, but you can do it!

Neesha,
I think there are a lot of good answers here and I hope you appreciate my bluntness, but based on how you are asking the question, I would say you may be better off considering other options.
I've worked in technology since the 70's and currently have about 110 web sites that do various things. I fear there is no simple and useful answer to your question. If you don't already know much more than your question implies, technology will likely move faster than you can learn it.
Many people try to convince others that starting an online business is 'the way to go' but it's like anything else. You can start any business, but if you don't know a lot about it, you'll likely end up with an empty wallet.
Sorry for the painful answer but I hope you find it helpful in the long run.
No one is going to give you a blueprint to become successful. If you want to be an entrepreneur, get ready to make a lot of mistakes and learn from them. Einstein said 'Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.' A good thing you have going for you is that with all the technology advances, you can start a business cheaply. Just make sure to have some other income going in so you don't feel the pressure to make money right away. Remember to adage without risk there's no reward.
If you have a passion for something it will be easier to turn that into an online business than to start something you have no interest in. There are a number of ways to make money online from an eccomerce website to affiliate marketing to a blog. All of these require a great del of time and dedication so you need to have an interest in the subject matter sels you will find interest rapidly fading before you get to mseeing any return in revenue.
There are some really good post here and all good advice. If you are serious about making money online with an online business you need to take action put in the hard work.
You need to find a product, service, affiliate program or new idea to sell or monetise, some thing that you can believe in and be enthusiastic about. It needs to be of value to your niche audience and the must be a decent profit margin.
You need a half decent website.
But, most importantly you need to drive traffic to you website, with out traffic you will have a nice site, but no business.
The internet is a powerful for of leverage that can allow anyone who what's to have there own home business to compete with any bricks and mortar business. But, you need to learn how to market online, to drive traffic and convert it to sales.
If you are trying to learn to drive traffic and market online, on you own it is trial and error, welcome to the school of hard knocks.
You really need find a mentor, that is prepared to spend time to show you how you can use free social media site like, facebook, youtube, twitter etc to drive traffic for free. A mentor who understand SEO and also pay per click PPC which will provide high volume semi pre-qualified traffic. Just a word of warning PPC can be very costly if do not know what you are doing, but if you do, your reach and the volume of traffic is endless.
Don't be fooled if you are new to online biz it is a big learning curve, which can be learn quickly with help from people willing to share. As long as you are willing to put in the work.
It is worth the effort to go through the learning curve, once you have learned the skill to market online you can apply it to any online business.
Don't give up and find a good mentor you can look up to and show you the ropes.
