I'm trying to start an website as a small side buisness with a friend as a general partnership. We're in New Jersey.
I've already obtained an EIN and completed the Online Tax/Employer registration, although we won't have any employees.
I'm pretty confused as to what else we need to do before we begin sales. I think we have to charge sales tax, and file sales taxes quarter anually, but I don't know when the first of that tax year would be. I also think I understand that as a general partnership, any income would be filed by us as individuals, again, not 100% sure though.
Anyway, I feel pretty lost, and most government webites feel so cluttered that they haven't really helped. Any help would be great.

It might help for you to either get a few good and highly rated books, learn for a while or hire someone to handle and maybe mentor you on SEO. Good luck. Once you know how to be found, you should do very well.

Before you even begin to design your website think about SEO best practices so you can start off on the right foot and not have to revamp your entire website later. It is a common mistake many business owners make - don't pay a web developer to do anything to your site without first making sure that they will implement the right practices to get your page to rank highly on search engines.

I agree with the above- before you worry about all the legalities of setting up a business, focus on the things that are really important. Like how exactly are you going to get people to visit your website, and what you want those people to do once they are on your site. Website with no traffic is absolutely useless. It still kind of shocks me that some people (not YOU personally) believe that setting up an online business starts from making a webpage. If you have not done your homework properly you will sink before you even posted any content on your site. With online businesses the forward planning is THE most important thing, no doubt. I agree, the first thing to do is research the niche. Gather as much relevant information as you can, then break it down into start-up stages. If you plan it out on paper first, you will see a progression so will then be prepared for most of the pitfalls. Of course, the are always extraneous factors, but planning and research reduce the risks.

It depends on if you're selling something or not. I'll suggest you wait and talk to a mentor 1st. Please read my posting earlier. The 3 reliable sources that I always recomment are: your local SBDC, SCORE and micromentor.org. As I said earlier, I used all three.
