I receomend attending a trade show or 2 and finding great products and suppliers.  Most producers/distributers are now very concerned about the supply chain so they will really take great care of you!!    

There are also some other basic things you will need to do. You will need to file a fictitios name with the county and also apply for a resale license. You will probably need a retail business license of some sort. Every state and county is a little different. Don't forget to apply for a tax id. Go to irs.gov and look for form ss4. Think about whether or not you want to be a sole proprietor (more personal liability) or if you want to create an LLC, S corp, or C corp. If you do have a business entity created you can use places like legal zoom but I would only do that if you are going to take on the responsibility of all the paperwork that goes along with it.

what kind of store will it be? Make sure you get a strong web presence so you can have sales online person. Thats extra money!..  Good luck with everything .

Not sure where you are located - but, try to find a small business development center (SBDC) or go online at SCORE (score.org). These services are free and can help you outline and research a business plan. You business plan will help you better understand what you face in opening this business - including understanding your customers.

Get an accountant and set up QuickBooks.  Make sure you don't order too much inventory at first.  Retail businesses can cause havoc with cash flow, because you have to buy inventory and pay employees, rent, insurance, etc. -- all before sales come in.  You'll need a cash flow budget to make sure you don't fall short of money and manage in flows and out flows properly.   Also, depending on the type of business and your neighborhood, consider a security system for your store.  And even during the day while you are there, watch you cash drawer and easily pocketed merchandise.  With retail, your profits really can 'shrink.'   Good luck.

Danasue,   Although it's possible to set up and start a business without using an attorney, you really should strongly consider using one (especially for the big stuff). You can probably form your corporation online, but when it comes to some things (reviewing contracts, store leases, vendor agreements, etc.), it's always best to have one by your side.   Insuring a commercial business is very similar to securing other forms of insurance (with specific exceptions of course). Shop around and ask a lot of questions (which is another good reason to have an attorney around).   The best place to get started?
