Starting sole Prop. in New York State.

I am looking to start a sole prop. in NY State. It is a very simple and small
dog breeding venture. I'm talking one or two litters a year MAX, and maybe
$30,000 income, but the operating costs (board, food, vet, fencing, etc.)
over the first few years are about equal (or higher) than the income.
Questions:
Where to start with DBA? I know the name is open, now do I register with NYS
to get Tax ID first? I'm kind of lost here.
thanks
for any help.

name, you will apply for your sales and use tax permit from the state
department of revenue or taxation. Registering a name and obtaining a sales
tax permit are two very different things.
