I am starting a tax preparation business, and I'm not exactly sure what I need to do as far as permits and licenses go. I will be a sole proprietor, and I will be working out of my home. I won't have any employees, so I'm not sure what I need. I'd appreciate any help anyone may be able to offer. Thank you. Do I need to register a ficticious name with the state (Florida)?

mention of the IRS's new requirement to register as a tax return preparer, a
process which also requires taking and passing a test... here's link to page
of information at IRS website:

BTW, this is the business I'm in... and so I'll share perspective that there
appears to be a mass exodus from tax preparation business by non-CPA,
non-enrolled-agent, non-attorney preparers who *don't* want to study for and
take the test. This factor could be either good or bad from your point of
view...
Good luck, btw, if you decide to do this. It's actually a very fun "people"
business.
