One really important issue missing from the this thread's discussion is
mention of the IRS's new requirement to register as a tax return preparer, a
process which also requires taking and passing a test... here's link to page

BTW, this is the business I'm in... and so I'll share perspective that there
appears to be a mass exodus from tax preparation business by non-CPA,
non-enrolled-agent, non-attorney preparers who *don't* want to study for and
take the test. This factor could be either good or bad from your point of
view...

First I want to congratulate you on taking the initiative in starting your own business. Doing so is not without risk and you'll have to work hard at your practice to compete with other tax practitioners in your local area, however by ensuring you follow some solid fundamentals you should be able to gather clients and establish yourself as a successful tax practioner. Some tips for you: 1. Design a website (or have one designed for you) and get it up ASAP. Optimize your site for local keywords to ensure that you target the kind of prospective clients you're looking for e.g. 'Seatle Washington tax accoutants' 2. Network, network, network. Join community groups, join the local chamber of commerce, have lunch with lawyers (great tax referrals). 3. Read, read and read some more. If you want to be a successful tax accountant you'll have to ensure that you're up on all the recent tax changes and planning strategies. To me, one of the most important parts of finding an accountant for either my personal use or for my business was a referral from a friend. You need to build trust both through customers as well as through your website. I can't necessarily help with licensing, but it's impartive that you have references and examples of your work available for potential customers especially if you are working out of your home which is going to be a red flag for some business owners.

You will need to register your business name with your state or county agency that handles such matters. You will also need to obtain a tax preparer identification number from the IRS using form W-7P found at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7p.pdf You may want to reconsider being a sole proprietor and instead register your business as an LLC. As a sole proprietor, your personal finances are at risk in case anything happens. As an LLC, the business is a separate entity from you. Thank you, Polin, for your response; I am aware of the earning potential of my business, and I hope to do well, although one of the priciples behind my business is to provide a needed service to people without charging outrageous fees. I do know how to do the job, as I have been preparing personal and business tax returns for more than 20 years, and I am a certified Tax Preparer. I will only be preparing basic tax returns, which will allow me to work with more clients in a given day, and I do have a fee schedule established. Also, even though this is the first time I have set up a business, I feel confident that I am taking all the necessary steps, and am conducting myself and my business practices in a professional manner.
