I have always found the government to be the best customer. They are always good for the money.

After getting your company approved to sell to the government, a good way to get noticed is to make sure you have your company listed in each available area that Government procurement specialists use as resources when hunting new contractors.

Entrpreneurs who are independent contractors, such as home improvement contractors, have unique problems in getting government contracts. First and foremost, a contractor needs to get a Dun & Bradstreet number and register with Central Contract Registration (ccr.gov). At the same time, one should register with the equivalent system in their home state and city. That done, one has to research where home improvement work is actually done. For example, within every state, there are public housing developments funded by the feds but run by the locality. They often put out bids/RFPs for home improvement type work. Also, one of the biggest users of home improvement skills is Job Corps. Go to fbo.gov and search for opportunities under the following NAICS code: 811411 - Home Repair and Maintenance. Another idea is purchase order procurement. Under federal rules, an agency does not have to put under $25,000 procurements up for bid. When registering as a small business with the government, be sure to look at the qualifications for 8(a), HubZone, VOSB and other set aside categories to see if your company qualifies. They can give you an advantage over other small businesses is some cases. Contacting the small business office at a local military base is a good source of information related to these programs or each branch of the military has a 'sell to the Air Force' or 'Sell to the Army' website. Another registration I haven't seen mentioned is Wide Area WorkFlow (WAWF). I could be primarily in my industry of aircraft sustainment and engineering, but most of the contracts I deal with require all invoices to be submitted electronically through WAWF. The government has a reputation of being slow to pay, but WAWF and significantly sped up the process. There is online training available. It might be worth looking at the training in advance to be familiar with the the system so you know what to expect if you see it as a requirement.

Small businesses often find it easiest to begin by applying for state goverment contracts. You will need to register with your state department of purchasing. Then, you will be able to access their web site where they post bid opportunities. I am registered in both my state and a neighboring state. It took about 10 minutes to complete the registration process and it is free. And yes, I have received contracts through them. Sometimes, depending on the product or service needed, you may be the only bidder or one of only a couple of bidders.
