there opens numerous liability issues. First, are you, yourself, bonded? If
not, for your protection, you should be. Have you registered your business
with your state or county agency that registers businesses? Do you have a
local business license if required by your city? Are you filing taxes each
year on your income? When you publicly represent yourself as a business, you
need to comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
Having employees presents additional challenges. You will need to pay
unemployment and Social Security taxes on them, carry workers comp insurance,
carry liability insurance and get each person bonded, which entails
background checks and more.
You may want to visit with a counselor at a small business development
center, womens business center or a SCORE office in your area. Their services
are free and they can help you expand the business while making sure you are
in compliance with all necessary laws.
