travel nursing agency

Hi, I am starting a travel nursing agency and am a bit confused about all the licenses and permits needed.

Do you get a business license from the state or locally?

I have a EIN number from the federal government, do I also need one from state and local?

Also it said to check with zoning as I will be based at home. Do I need to do this if I have read the rules for my state and none of them will affect me?

Answering any of these questions will help. Thank you

This will depend on the type of business entity structure you use.  Sole Proprietorships, partnerships, LLCs, and S-Corps all require you to file business profits on your personal tax form.  Normally, what this means is that you need to pay for Self-Employment tax.  If you make a large amount of money that will get reported into your personal tax, you would need to estimate your annual tax and then make estimate tax payments on a QUARTERLY basis.  Here's a quick link to give you more details:   http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=110413,00.html   Normally with 'tax pass-through-to-individuals' business entities, you usually need to pay estimated taxes.  But if you didn't really make that much money or are in the loss zone, there is obviously no need to pay estimated taxes.   For C-Corps, you would normally pay yourself a salary or a dividend.  If you pay yourself a salary, the C-Corp would need to withhold taxes on behalf of the IRS.  The amount would depend on the W-2 form that you yourself submit to your own Corporation.   For a small business, I would normally suggest a LLC or a S Corp.  S Corp seem to be a fairly popular choice these days.     Cheers!

Thank you! That helps alot. So who do you pay taxes to when you are paying yourself? Is is yearly, or do you send them monthly?

You get a business license from your local city hall.  Business licenses are basically the way that cities collect taxes from local businesses.  Well, that and sales tax. :)   You only need one EIN.  EIN is specifically used by IRS for tax reporting purposes.  All state and local use this EIN.  Think of the EIN as the social security number for a business and you'll get the idea.   Depending on the business, some services or home-based business do not need to get a business license.  You should check this with your local city hall.  If you do need to get a business license, the city will check the zoning and other things automatically for you and tell you whether you can run that type of business in your home or not.     Hope this helps.
