I started a Computer Services company on the Sunshine Coast about 6 months ago. My marketing strategy was to get 10000 flyers printed up, and hand delivered each one (my time didn't cost me anything). I got to meet so many new interested people, business flowed, and now I get 50% of my new clients via referrals. So flyers was a good start for me. I all ready see some good points, if you plan to do SEO, better include you locale for it would easily determine that your place in with in reach, or just with a block away, there are a lot of free web hosting you can try to apply on them if you have already some more income them that's the time  you can buy for a domain. try to inform you friends on facebook that you already had your business up ang running , make tweets on your nearby friends with that, you are guarantee to have a very friendly business Computer service. @ksundheim - Thanks :) But I think it will depends on his target customer, if he is targeting local market then I believe reference will play and also an important aspect that he should consider and look into. But you are correct if he is targeting a larger market, like online service then chasing or relying with reference would do him little good. But it can give him some initial or based local customer that would help stabilized his business.

Gret nailed the answer in my opinion. SEO, PPC, web advertising and references. However, in today's business, I would focus on the first three and take the forth when it comes, but not rely nor chase after it.
