I haven't used Twitter for my small business although I've seen several who are using them quite effectively. Maybe it's time to use one...

The best way to describe twitter is to say that it is a means to connect with other people with similar interests or who are interested in what you have to say. It is a lot more than simply a traffic source for you website. Twitter is a microblogging tool, where you have 140 characters to use at a time. That is a challange, since you want to cram as much information in there as possible. However, it is a great tool for branding or to connect. Just be casual, do not spam or you'll loose followers.

Yes, I think twitter will work for local business with proper targeted leads. I have read a blog about a local pizzeria in LA where 30% of their income's generated from twitter. As a follow- up, Our CEO Mark Walsh from GeniusRocket, gave a presentation at a 'Sweets & Tweets' meeting in Georgetown last week. As he was speaking, most everyone in the audience were tweeting and posting based on his talk, and we saw an increased spike in web-site traffic after the presentation. Twitter is a very powerful tool, especially if you are at a meeting or event, not too many people follow people who post about what they are eating for dinner, or the tootpast they use, or what they are going to watch on tv. We atribute many hits to GeniusRocket.com from twitter as our community posts and discusses projects via our site. If used properly, twitter can be very effective! It is effective just so time consuming..... You really have to build your contacts and that is time you could have spent getting new clients... So be carefull to invest time only if all other options have been exhausted or if you can just invest 5 minutes a day.

We have big plans for Twitter...just have not yet had the time to follow through.

There really is no reason for Twitter to be time consuming. Updating 3 times a day should take all of 90 seconds, which leaves you over 3 minutes to reply to your followers. We're only talking about posts of 140 characters here. In my experience Twitter works better business-business than it does for business-consumer right now. Often times it may give you access to a decision maker that would otherwise be off limits. For running shoes, for example I wonder if it would an effective way to contact national chains about carrying your products.
