I am trying to do some initial research into the possibility of starting my own micro test lab that caters to small business and individuals to test lead in products, as well as a water and food chemical and microbiological contaminants. I feel that there is an opportunity for business in helping small business afford testing regulations or for own personal interest.
My only fundamental question on the viability of such a thing would be the market itself, which I have no information on. Can anyone aid me with advice on figuring out how much business one could generate in the realm of lead and microbial testing? I guess I'm looking for statistics on the numbers of products tested, accounts of similar companies etc. Anything that could help me build an informed business plan.

Sounds like an interesting venture! I would recommend checking out the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's lead guide . If you can't find the exact statistics you are looking for, the library tab links you to more resources and allows you to submit a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request.

You can go to the Google SEO pages and type in various keywords related with microbial testing and lead testing and see how many hits it gets per day. You might want to start off with the bigger cities first.
