Webpage - do I need to register a business?

Hi:

 

I've been teaching ESL overseas and I'm considering developing a web page and blog with on-line content for students and teachers.

 

(1) 1st issue: If I earn income from 'google hits,' do I need to register as a business?

 

(2) 2nd issue: Another form of income might come from the sale of E-books. Same question regarding registering as a business.

 

An IRS representative explained that I would need to fill out schedules for self employment and profit & loss, but I wasn't sure if I would also need to get a business license.

 

My home state is Virginia.

I believe technically you are not responsible for filing taxes as an
independent contractor for earnings of less than $700/year with a single
company (Google in your case). Even then, if you do need to file taxes
because you are over that limit, you can still file under your personal SSN.
You do not have to register as a business since you are classified as an
independent contractor.

However, opening up an LLC wouldn't hurt and has many incentives (taxes,
liability, etc).

That an obligation to be a part of United States, not just that, when you are registered your are helping the economy of state, since there is an economic crisis.

It will be better to consult your accountant before you take any decision, he will be the best person to make you aware of local rules and regulations.

You may have to pay a penalty for not registering.You are not penalised for registering, in fact, you may benfit from it if you make a loss. Most accountants have a free advice session (or free phone call) and it is worth discussing your circumstances with them. Other factors such as current salaried income may also need to be taken into account.

As a responsible US citizen, you have too, the countey is facing a lot of problem when it comes to financial. Now, a small amount would be a great help. Not only that if you are registered then might be, there would be a lot of clients that may come to you. Always think positive. In every good deeds that you do, there is always a good way that is waiting for you. Keep up the good work.CHEERS!

Yes - but, it may not be as hard or entailed as you might think. If you are doing this under your own name - you might only have to file an assumed name or doing business as certificate. I would suggest that you look into a LLC - might require a little more in the way of paperwork and fees - but the protection it will give you in the long-run (like not having your personal assets at risk like your house, retirement accounts, etc) will more than make up for the time and cost. Find a SCORE office or SBDC in your area - both are free and you can even contact SCORE people online - they will better know the laws of your state and be able to get you moving in the right direction.

You definitely need to register your business, but I don't think you will need a business license.  A business license apply to businesses like Food Establishments, but you may want to double check with your local County.

A business license is not the same as registering a business name and entity type. If you anticipate making money from your web site, you need to register a business name and entity type with your state or county agency that handles such matters. The exception would be if you plan to be a sole proprietor and use your name as the business name. Business licenses are obtained from your city clerk's office. Some cities require only certain types of businesses to have a license (Taxis, restaurants, etc.); others require all businesses to obtain a license. A quick call to your city clerk's office should provide the information you need.
