What Benefits Could A PR Release Bring to a Small Business?

I must admit that I know nothing about PR, however our still small, but growing business has had some accomplishments that were quite good these past 2 months. I want to send out a press release, but don't know if it would do any good. We don't have room on our website to repost the press release. Also, I don't want to spam my current clients with the document via a mass email. Third, I'm not sure if it would come up when you Google my name on the first page as there is enough clutter there. With these variables in place, could a press release help us? If so how? Thanks for taking the time to learn this as I'm not sure what to do.
