Hello,

While searching on the web, I heard about trademark but i don't how it functions. Everyone was saying trademark is important for your business. Is it so?

A trademark is a unique symbol or logo you use to identify your business in your marketing materials, on your web site, etc. Having a trademark is not necessary, but it can bring visual appeal to your materials and help set your business apart from your competitors. You can design your own trademark or you can have a graphic designer do it. Once you decide on a symbol or logo, then you should legally register it in your state. If you do business in more than one state, you can register it nationally at www.uspto.gov.

It depends on where you register the trademark. You can register it locally at the state level, which protects you from infringement only in your state. You can register it nationally, which offers nation-wide protection in the U.S. If you do business in multiple countries, then you might register it with the World Intellectual Property Organization, http://www.wipo.int/madrid/en/ If you don't live in the U.S. and do business only in your home country, then check for a regional or national patent and trademark office in your country. A trademark protects a word, phrase, symbol, design or combination ofthese things. Basically, you get something trademarked to protect yourproduct's name, logos, and such.
