Why is it so hard to start a business ? Today`s laws are getting so hard for
the middle-class person to start a business. With everything that is going on
in the world of today, we can`t do whatever we want to do to make some extra
money, if you can`t find a job, what else are we suppose to do for Icome. Can
someone tell us what we can do to get by these days. What is really out there
for us all, not enough decisions for us make one. There are limited choices
to make to try to take care of our family. Robbing and stealing is not a
choice that many of us do not want to put into our choice box of to do list
in life. Its bad enought that have to struggle to keep food on the table for
our family and yourself. What I was trying to do one day is get my business
up off the ground and make some extra money, when I went down to the Health
Department to see what was needed to do For a Home Base Business. They gave
me the law of the land about what I need to have in order to get up off the
floor,OMG. When leaving the Health Department Office it was so Depressing it
was`nt funny. These are the things that the lawmakers have to try and keep
you down. Can some one tell me how I can get a Cake and Pie Business off the
ground. I seen a story on Wsbtv.com about how a lady went to state to get the
law changed on what one of the requirements were for starting a home
business. Want to find out where the information is for what is needed to get
my business off the ground. Can someone tell me where I need to look.

business you choose is full of additional laws for all the reasons already
given.
I would suggest this - find a SCORE or SBDC office in your area and talk to
them (it is free) and try to see what they say about the health department
and they may have some ideas for you or be able to help you work around /
through them.
Or, they might be able to help you look at a different business idea that
does not have all the rules and regs.
Starting a business is hard but it is not impossible. If you can find a way
to move forward - even given what you have just been through - then I know
that you will be a success becuase I then would know that you could and will
overcome any and all obstacles in your way.

Though it may seem mean-spirited on the health department's part, if someone
became ill and sued you, you would be in a mess.
Business licenses, including licenses for homebased businesses, were
instituted because of people who abused the system. If everyone acted in a
responsible manner, we wouldn't need so many rules and regulations.
Businesses that sell food to the public must do their baking in a commercial
kitchen. Many churches and senior citizens centers have commercial kitchens.
You might look for one where you can rent space. Also look for caterers who
would be willing to share space. Many caterers do not offer desserts. You may
be able to work out an agreement with one to do their baking so they can
offer pie or cake to their customers. You might also look for restaurants
that offer only breakfast and lunch. They may be willing to rent space in the
evening. As SeattleCPA mentioned, there are opportunities out there, you just
have to find them.

I agree it's tough out there right now. I see it every day with my small
business clients. But I also have to say that even (and maybe especially) in
this tough economy, opportunities abound. All this crazy change we're
suffering though creates tons of chances for small business folk to build new
income streams.
BTW, in saying this, I don't mean at all to minimize the challenges or the
stresses we all feel as we struggle with all the bad stuff. But there are
still lots of good ventures just waiting...
I'll now get off my soapbox.
