Me and a friend of mine are trying to find ways to start a plug and abandon business in the offshore industry. This is when cement is pumped down into the well and the platform is pulled out of the water. Now one idea was to get a grant. To me P&A is one of the first steps in the transfer to alternative energy. Would I qualify for an alternative energy grant under these circumstances, and if not, what type of grant would I qualify for to begin this business?

You would probably not qualify for any grants. Alternative energy grants are given to businesses to develop forms of alternative energy, such as wind turbines, geothermal energy and solar energy uses. Grants are not generally available to for-profit businesses unless you have invented a new, cutting edge product that is in the national interest. If you create jobs, you might qualify for a tax credit once the businesss is established.
