Date Issued:
Monday, September 30, 2002
Report Number:
2-34

On September 30, 2002, the OIG issued Audit Report 2-34, Audit on SBA’s controls over the Access, Disclosure, and Use of Social Security Numbers by Third Parties.  The OIG found that the SBA makes legal and informed disclosures of Social Security Numbers (SSNs) to third parties, has appropriate controls over other entities access and use of SSNs, and has adequate controls over access to an individual’s SSN maintained in its databases.  The OIG found that the SBA did not have appropriate controls over contractors’ access and use of SSNs.  The OIG recommended that the SBA develop management controls over contracting activities involving Privacy Act information.
