HARTFORD, CT – Thomas Dolan, Jr., president of Essex-based Hi-Rel Products, has been namedThomas Dolan, Jr.
the U.S. Small Business Administration’s New England Regional Subcontractor of the Year,
according to an announcement made by Bernard Sweeney, SBA Connecticut District Director.

The Regional Subcontractor of the Year Award is presented annually to a small business that has
provided the government and industry with outstanding goods and services as a subcontractor.
Nominations are evaluated on the following criteria: Overall Management, Delivery Performance,
Technical Capabilities, and Exceptional Results
, along with six other selection criteria for this
award.

“This company is a true testament of only implementing high quality work and customer service for
over 41 years”, said Sweeney. Hi-Rel Products, Inc., founded in 1973, began operations out of the
family home by brokering primarily chemically etched metal components. Today the company is a world class leader in the supply of metal components to the microelectronic industry.

Shirley Patterson, senior manager supply chain operations, of Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems, nominated Dolan for this award. Patterson says they are “quick to respond to program requests to escalate delivery of parts and routinely meet or exceed those expectations.” She also nominated them “because of years of consistently high levels of performance in quality/delivery/pricing”.

In 1980 Hi-Rel expanded its technical capability by starting a tool and die shop. In 1987 further technical expansion was completed via acquisition of a small chemical milling and electroplating company. This was also their 2nd location. In 1997 another technical expansion resulted in the 3rd facility dedicated to alloys, where eutectic solders for microelectronic applications are rolled out. All three divisions’ together form one of the largest American organizations supplying the microelectronics industry with high quality milled stamped or formed lids for hybrid packages.

“The most impressive part of building this company is that Mr. Dolan’s business strategy was very simple, commitment to quality and customer service that have been key since their inception,” said SBA District Director Sweeney. “Mr. Dolan and family are to be commended for increasing revenues and creating 105 high quality manufacturing jobs of which 30 are located in Connecticut”.

Mr. Dolan will be honored along with seven other small business award winners, at an awards breakfast on May 24, 2011 at Amarante’s Sea Cliff in New Haven, CT.
