FOLEY, Minn. – Murphy Chevrolet of Foley has been named the Minnesota Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Minnesota District Office as well as the upper Midwest Region.

The Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year is selected to honor a family-owned and operated business which has been passed on from one generation to another. Nominees must also serve as a majority owner and operator or bear principal responsibility for operating the small business with at least a fifteen-year track record. Nancy Hoffman, Economic Development Director of the Benton County Economic Development Office nominated Murphy Chevrolet for this award.

The regional award winner is selected from among the state winners. In addition to Minnesota, SBA’s upper Midwest Region includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Murphy Chevrolet is an 80-year old business. During the Depression, in 1930, Daniel V. Murphy became a GM dealer in the city of Foley. He was able to profitably continue his business. His son, Daniel (Denny) Murphy started working at the dealership in high school and in 1970 became a dealer himself. Denny and his wife Mary have been running the dealership and now their two sons have moved up into the business and are part owners. Their older son Chad Murphy is general manger and Monte Murphy is the sales manager.

With the economic downturn, businesses were hit hard. The automotive industry was one the hardest hit. With strong management and hard decisions, Murphy Chevrolet has been able to continue profitably through the recession.

In 2009, GM closed over 1,000 dealerships (or 1/5 of the dealerships) while Murphy Chevrolet managed to stay in business. GM determined who would stay by considering sales effectiveness, the customer satisfaction index, profitability, and their financial situation. Murphy Chevrolet has always been one of the top 10 in the State for GM Sales Effectiveness and many of the years on of the top 5. The company weathered the “Great Depression” and the “Great Recession.”
