Nursery, landscape design & construction business owner leverages past experience as sales & marketing manager to grow business from 3 to 40 employees

SANTA ANA, CA – John McCabe, President and Owner of McCabe’s Nursery/Gallery of Grains, Inc. has been selected to receive the 2014 Small Business Person of the Year Finalist Award by SBA’s Santa Ana District Office. McCabe was nominated for the award by Hector Hernandez, Executive Vice President/SBA Manager at Capital Bank, based on John McCabe’s business integrity, length of operations, and continued growth and success.

McCabe’s Nursery is a family run business serving the Temecula Valley and was formed in 2003 by key founder John McCabe after his retirement from the pharmaceutical sales industry in 2002. Having a talent and passion for designing landscapes as well as having extensive knowledge of plants and trees, John decided to combine his talents of designing outdoor living spaces, botany, and his sales and marketing background to create McCabe’s Nursery which has since grown to 40 employees. He is now an award-winning designer that oversees the crew which turns his concepts into reality.

McCabe’s Nursery offers sales from their ten acre plant and tree nursery, carrying over 55,000 plants and trees, as well as custom landscaping design, outdoor living spaces, patio covers, outdoor kitchens, fire and water features, sod, and irrigation systems. In addition to their sales operation, they offer design, construction, and maintenance services, typically without the use of subcontractors to customers in Murrieta, Temecula, Wildomar, Fallbrook, Menifee, and Winchester.

While the business has experienced significant growth during its ten year history, it has also faced challenges. Coming out of the economic crisis, the business was at breakeven for 2010 and reported losses in 2011. The business began reporting net profits in 2012 and 2013. Despite these challenges, the business’s increasing revenue and net profit trends evidence their owners’ management ability to weather economic fluctuations.

John McCabe and his employees donate time, money, and services to a variety of community organizations. They are highly involved with City of Temecula activities and won an award for their entry in the 2013 Santa’s Electric Lights Parade, and participated in fundraising activities for the Old Town Temecula Rotary Club.

"John McCabe’s story is one that resonates with many of us – after a successful career in one industry, he took his passion and created a successful, growing business around it that employs his family and dozens of skilled industry professionals while providing a valuable service to the communities in southwest Riverside County," said J. Adalberto Quijada, District Director for the SBA’s Santa Ana District Office.

Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, in order to recognize the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. As part of National Small Business Week, SBA takes the opportunity to highlight their impact, working to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness.

McCabe will be recognized and receive the 2014 Small Business Person of the Year Finalist Award at the Small Business Awards program produced by the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at the Disney Grand Californian Hotel on May 21, 2014 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.
