LOS ANGELES – At a ceremony today, seventeen local small business owners graduated from the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA), Los Angeles District Office Emerging Leaders Initiative, held at the University of Southern California.

“Through the Emerging Leaders Initiative, graduates received the training and skills necessary to develop and expand their small businesses,” said Ellen Thrasher, SBA’s Director of Entrepreneurial Development. “The program creates a learning environment to accelerate the growth of high-potential small businesses, stimulates job creation and helps drive economic development within their communities.”

Offered for the first time in Los Angeles, the intense eight-month training included approximately 100 hours of classroom time with tailored curriculum, limited class size and provided the opportunity for small business owners to work with experienced mentors in small groups, attend workshops and develop connections with their peers, city officials, business leaders, and financial communities.

“As the inaugural graduates of the program, these small business executives are poised to create an economic ripple effect,” said Victor Parker, District Director for SBA’s Los Angeles District Office. “The graduates are equipped with the support, resources and enhanced business skills to succeed in increasing their revenue, creating jobs and driving sustainable economic growth throughout our community.”

Since 2008, the Emerging Leaders Initiative, which is free for participants, has helped more than 1,300 promising small business owners in 27 underserved communities across the country attend classes and graduate, increase their revenue, create jobs, and help drive local economic growth.  In fact, in 2011, the graduating class created 908 jobs; over 60 percent of graduates increased revenue; and together graduates accessed over $26 million in new financing and over $330 million in government contracts.
