MINNEAPOLIS – Shelley Peterson-Bourland, Vice President of Business Banking at M&I Marshall & Ilsley Bank in Edina, has been named Minnesota Financial Services Champion of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The Financial Services Champion award is presented annually in each state to individuals who assist small businesses through advocacy efforts to increase the usefulness and availability of accounting or financial services. Christopher Flynn, former Senior Vice President of Business Banking at M&I Marshall & Ilsley Bank, nominated Peterson-Bourland for this award.

Peterson-Bourland has been in the banking industry for over 25 years and is no stranger to the challenges of managing through economic cycles.

When M&I Bank needed to create a role of SBA Specialist in the Minnesota Region, Peterson-Bourland rose to the challenge. Her role as SBA Specialist helped M&I meet the needs of small businesses by elevating the entire region’s awareness and capability in delivering SBA programs into the market. Denise Favors of the Minnesota SBA District Office says, “She represents a change in the face of commercial banks and provides a refreshing look at the current needs of the small business community.”

She volunteers many hours with the Business Planning Center to consult one-on-one with many small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs who need access to sound professional advice. The Business Planning Center is a grassroots, non-profit neighborhood organization that offers a variety of programs including assistance in developing business plans, on-site counseling, volunteer bankers, volunteer lawyers and loan information seminars.

As an advocate for small business, she personally contacted Senators Klobuchar and Franken to voice her support and to encourage their support of the Jobs Bill.

Peterson-Bourland has been a dedicated supporter of small business in Minnesota. Her efforts have greatly enhanced the business climate here and she has been an excellent one-on-one resource for many small businesses that have needed sound advice and access to critical capital to operate and grow their businesses.

Peterson-Bourland graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with a BA in Economics.
