Minnesota SBA Honors Financial Services Champions

Ham Lake, Minn. – Susan (Sue) Savarese (Managing Partner) and Alfred (Al) Sannerud (Owner Emeritus) of Sannerud, Savarese and Associates, P.A., in Ham Lake, Minn., have been named Minnesota Financial Services Champions of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The Financial Services Champion award is presented annually in each state to individuals who assist small businesses through advocacy efforts to increase the usefulness and availability of accounting or financial services.  Jolynn Erikson (President) and Wendy Renner (Executive Director) of the Ham Lake Chamber of Commerce nominated Sue and Al for this award. 

Sannerud, Savarese and Associates is a certified public accounting firm providing accounting, income tax services and financial planning assistance.  They specialize in serving the needs of family-owned and closely held businesses.  They provide free seminars to small business owners whether they are clients of the firm or not.  They have helped over a thousand small businesses start and grow in the 38 years of its existence.  Many of the current (all women) employees have been with the company for over 20 years.  Pauline Peterson, the company’s Firm Administrator, has been with the firm for 34 years. 

Sue serves as a recognized expert on business taxes and often speaks to groups about best business practices. She is on the board and is the treasurer of Nucleus Clinic, a women’s health center in Coon Rapids.  She has served as treasurer of her church and is a member of the hand bell choir.  She is one of the founding parents and former treasurer of the Andover High School Drama Parents Organization.  She is on the Anoka county Workforce Board.

A saw a need for small business banking in the Ham Lake area and was one of the founding stockholders in Community Pride Bank.  It is the only bank chartered with its headquarters in Ham Lake.  Alfred helped start “Free2B,” a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit business that repairs and donates automobiles in Anoka County to promote economic independence for people in need.  He helped start “Bikes 4 Kids” which does the same with bicycles.  For many years, Al served on the Ham Lake Planning and Zoning commission an presently is on the Ham Lake Charter Commission and the Ham Lake Economic Development Corporation.  He is an active member of his church and was the first president of the congregation and former treasurer. 

The firm is dedicated to recycling and protecting the environment.  They also assist local small businesses by providing the office space for the Ham Lake Area chamber of Commerce.

Sue, Al, and their staff will be honored at the Minnesota Small Business Week Awards program on May 6, 2013, at the Depot Minneapolis.
