PORTLAND, Ore – The Portland District Office is pleased to announce the selection of Mike Nieto of Cat Works LLC, as the 2012 Minority Small Business Person of the Year.
Each year Portland District Office has the honor of recognizing an outstanding entrepreneur who is working within the auspices of SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program to build business capacity. This year, Mike Nieto and the team at Cat Works LLC, has demonstrated widespread successes in the 8(a) Program.
Mike established Cat Works on a foundation of his experiences in roadway and commercial construction in 2005. Cat Works has since grown to provide a diversity of services from “dirt to doors” as Mike says. These services include general contracting, project management, site development, grading and excavation, underground utilities, sewer, water lines, land clearing, demolition, and trucking.
In 2008, Mike applied to and was accepted to the 8(a) Business Development Program. Now, having completed the first four developmental years of the program, Mike is entering into the transitional segment of the program—where SBA’s local Business Opportunities Specialists will look forward to working with him for another 5 years.
Under Mike Nieto’s leadership, Cat Works is successfully breaking into new markets—both geographically and locally, winning contracts with a range of federal government agencies. Cat Works now employs a staff of 20, up from two employees just a few years ago.
“Cat Works is a great example of how firms can work to achieve sustainable growth through the 8(a) Business Development Program,” said Acting District Director Robert DuCotè.
In addition to its business successes and substantial sales growth, Cat Works demonstrates outstanding commitment to the community. Cat Works is working with the Miracle Network to build a new baseball field for disabled children, and the Cat Works team has donated labor and materials in support of the “Linderman Project” to build a home for an elderly couple with unsuitable housing. Cat Works also supports Oregon Retrouvaille, an organization that helps married couples grow and recuperate from life struggles.
Mike is scheduled to receive his award at the annual Minority Enterprise Development ceremony hosted by the Business Diversity Institute in Portland, Oregon.
