Denis Gray Trucking, Inc. Takes Top Honors, Celebration Recognizing Winners May 8 at Museum of Flight, Boeing Field

SEATTLE – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) 2014 Washington Family-Owned Small Business of the Year is Denis Gray Trucking, Inc. (DGT).  A second-generation, family-owned and operated company, DGT specializes in transporting oversize and overweight loads through the Western United States and Canada.

Founded in 1977 by Denis Gray, DGT is now run by his son Michael Gray and operates on more than three acres of truck parking and industrial storage in Puyallup.

“I had the pleasure of getting to know Mike from Denis Gray Trucking through the SBA Emerging Leaders program,” said Nancy Porzio, SBA Seattle district director. “Seeing the immense progress and growth of his company during the past year has been a delight to watch. His innovative approach to trucker pay is getting much-deserved attention within the trucking industry; he is a true family man and passionate business leader.”

DGT scored high in the four judging criteria areas including (1) showed evidence of success as measured by sales and profits; (2) increased employment opportunities for family members and non-family members in the business; (3) demonstrated potential necessary for long-term business success and economic growth; and (4) assisted with voluntary efforts to strengthen family-owned businesses within the community.

Gray started working for his father’s business during his summers as a teenager. He became a driver for the company at age 19, was brought into the office at age 25, and started running the company shortly thereafter. Additionally, his mother and sister also work full-time in the business.

“Our mission is to build trust with our employees, customers, vendors and partner trucking companies, and to provide a win-win environment for all,” said Gray. “The SBA and SBDC (Small Business Development Center) have helped us scale our business, develop a business plan, and turn our company into a great place to work while continuing to focus and expound upon our goals."

During the past year, DGT has implemented a new driver pay model that has enabled the company to dramatically lower its employee turnover, something that has been getting a lot of attention in the trucking industry.

The SBA 2014 Washington Family-Owned Small Business of the Year will be recognized at a local awards ceremony event May 8 in conjunction with National Small Business Week May 12-16.

“National Small Business Week is a time to recognize the impact small business has on our country,” said SBA Regional Administrator Calvin Goings. “It’s a chance to celebrate the dedicated, hard-working small business owners who are making a difference in their communities.”

Each year since 1963, the President has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of National Small Business Week. SBA recognizes outstanding small business owners for their personal successes and contributions to our nation.
