MIAMI - The U.S. Small Business Administration signed its first Strategic Alliance Memorandum (SAM) with the Highlands County Industrial Development Authority/Economic Development Commission this morning, May 7.

The purpose of this SAM agreement is to develop and foster mutual understanding and a working relationship between SBA and the Highlands County Industrial Development Authority/Economic Development Commission to foster small business development and expansion.

"SBA exists to provide counseling, small business capital and government contracting opportunities in all parts of south Florida," said South Florida Deputy District Director Jonel Hein. "This is our first SAM in Highlands County and we look forward to working with the county Industrial Development Authority/Economic Development Commission in entrepreneurial and small business development and growth."

“I appreciate all the efforts SBA provides Highlands County in their loan programs,” said Highlands County Industrial Development Authority/Economic Development Commission Executive Director Stephen Weeks.  “I hope we can not only do more loans for small businesses but get our local banks to become SBA loan providers.  When a small local bank makes a loan and it goes upside down, it’s nice to have that SBA guaranty behind it.”

SBA South Florida Deputy District Director Jonel Hein and Highlands County Industrial Development Authority/Economic Development Commission Executive Director Stephen Weeks signed the SAM which will remain in effect for two years.
