SBA Deputy Administrator to Attend Launch of the Los Angeles Emerging Leaders Program

LOS ANGELES – Marie C. Johns, Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), will highlight the importance of entrepreneurial education at an event celebrating the inaugural, Los Angeles class of SBA’s highly successful Emerging Leaders program on Friday, April 19.

The kick-off event, hosted by the University of Southern California, will feature 18 entrepreneurs from around the Greater Los Angeles area from various industries such as construction, importing, wholesale, technology and publishing to name a few. This is the first time this prestigious program has been offered in Los Angeles. It requires a 100-hour commitment on the participant’s part, which includes 40 hours of classroom time, 40 hours of homework and 20 hours of peer-to-peer mentoring.

Since 2008, SBA has trained small business owners across the country through its highly successful Emerging Leaders (formerly E200) executive-level training initiative—providing them with the tools and networking opportunities they need to sustain and grow their businesses.

The Emerging Leaders initiative, which is free for participants, has helped more than 1,300 promising small business owners in 27 underserved communities across the country attend classes and graduate, increase their revenue, create jobs, and help drive local economic growth. In fact, in 2011, the graduating class created 908 jobs; over 60 percent of graduates increased revenue; and together graduates accessed over $26 million in new financing and over $330 million in government contracts.

President Obama’s FY 2014 budget includes $40 million to build on these successes with an intensive small business leadership program to boost existing small businesses to the next level of growth.
