Federal Agencies Showcase Resources that Will Help Small Businesses Succeed
CHICAGO, IL — Representatives from more than 10 federal agencies and resource partners gathered at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to help Chicagoland small businesses understand what the federal government offers small businesses.
Valerie Van Meter, Senior Vice-President at the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank, and SBA Illinois District Director, Robert “Bo” Steiner, opened the event with remarks targeting how this symposium of federal agencies can help small business owners and representatives navigate through this economy. Both speakers emphasized their agencies’ commitments to supporting small businesses through programming, procurement opportunities, and technical assistance.
The event’s special guest, U.S. General Services Administration Deputy Administrator, Denise Turner-Roth, spoke of her agency’s ongoing commitment to small business participation in every aspect of GSA’s procurement needs. Administrator Roth specifically mentioned GSA Region Five Administrator, Ann Kalayil, saying, “Ann has taken the lead in ensuring that small business owners in this Region access GSA procurement opportunities as often as possible.” Ms. Roth also mentioned GSA’s strategic planning effort to enhance the agency’s small business procurement efforts using the HubZone Initiative as a viable tool for small businesses to procure federal contracts from GSA.
The event proceeded with informative presentations on topics including Department of Labor wage and hour requirements, Consumer Product Safety Commission processes to ensure products meet federal requirements, and IRS resources to help small businesses comply with their federal tax responsibilities. Small Business owners and representatives were also treated to an exhibit hall where they could ask agency staff questions to learn more about their respective federal programs and resources targeted for the small business community.
