SBA Names Minnesota Women in Business Champion

Warroad, Minn. – Penny Turgeon Kimble, President and Owner of the T-Shirt Barrel, has been named the Women in Business Champion of the Year for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Minnesota District Office.

The Women in Business Champion is selected annually to honor individuals who have fulfilled a commitment to the advancement of women’s business ownership.  Donna LaDuke, Executive Director of the Warroad Area Chamber of Commerce & Convention & Visitors Bureau, nominated Kimble for this award.

Penny Kimble has been in business for 11 years and even with the recession, her business has grown and prospered due to her hard work and diligence.  Penny began her business by working out of her home.  After a few years is became apparent that she needed to expand, so Penny moved her business into the city of Warroad where she rented space until 2010.  She and her husband built the building where she currently has her store. The T-Shirt Barrel does commercial embroidery, screen printing and direct-to-garment printing along with vinyl and transfer applications in a retail setting.

As she grows her business, Penny is heavily involved in supporting the community.  She is a mentor to many women who have started a business or currently own their own business.  Her advice, encouragement and assistance have made a difference in many women’s lives.

Penny initiated a breast cancer fundraising campaign 6 years ago when her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy and subsequent recommended treatments.  Three years ago, Penny herself also had a bilateral mastectomy and several other surgeries.  Although there were several setbacks, her business continued to grow with volunteer help from family and friends.

Penny has served as a member of the Warroad Area Chamber of Commerce board and was recently re-elected to another two-year term.  Her business has not only flourished in a very difficult economy, Penny has also increased her donations to various causes to help ease others’ financial burdens.

Thanks to Penny’s hard work and generosity, the Warroad community is a better place to live.

Penny will be honored at the Minnesota Small Business Week Awards program on May 6, 2013, at the Depot Minneapolis.
