Panelists:

Jewel Corpus, Corpus & Associates

- What do you do when your boss goes through a messy divorce and can no longer pay your salary?  Jewel turned this unfortunate situation into an opportunity to start her own business.  In 1995 Jewel launched her home-based business from her apartment starting with two clients from her former job and freelancing with other accounting firms to make ends meet.  Needing help with marketing, she met with Warner Wong - a business advisor with the Small Business Development Center who helped her rapidly grow from 2 clients to 65.  In 2002 she moved into a commercial office space sharing it with two of her biggest home-based clients who needed a meeting place.  She runs her company onsite full-time and acts as office manager for the other two businesses.  Jewel's business savvy fortifies the foundation of her accounting practice.  From the start it was never business as usual.

Brad Benner, X-Bar
- In 2002, Brad founded X-BAR, a Seattle-based IT services company that provides consulting, technology implementation, and support to small and midsized companies.  He simultaneously manages one of the Northwest's most nimble, innovative, and "green" information technology agencies.  Brad's interest in technology dates back to high school, where he developed an application to manage membership records for his local chapter of the National Honor Society. After adapting it for a variety of membership tracking purposes, he successfully marketed the software to over 250 organizations throughout the country.  In 2008, Brad was named the SBA's Washington State Young Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2009, the City of Seattle selected X-BAR to receive the Mayors' Small Business award.

Tanya Jimale, JTS Manage Services
- JTS is a Seattle urban success story. Tanya sold her house to bootstrap her business in the early days.  Her business has grown into a thriving 14-person firm, an African-American owned company offering construction management services in the Greater Puget Sound area. JTS operates by its core values of accountability and strong business ethics.   This dynamic entrepreneur is a natural teacher and mentor who shows respect and care to all, from clients to interns.  Tanya has great stories to share about how success followed when she nurtured her business, her employees, and her community at the same time.  In 2007, the City of Seattle selected JTS Manage Services to receive the Mayors' Small Business Award.
