The Boathouse at Rockett’s Landing, LLC
The Boathouse at Rockett’s Landing offers open-air dining and floor to ceiling windows that provide a panoramic view of the James River and the Richmond, Virginia skyline. The mastermind behind the restaurant is Kevin Healy. Healy brought entrepreneurial experience from his first restaurant, The Boathouse at Sunday Park at Brandermill.
Despite his previous experience and innovative business plan, when Healy decided to open a second location, he was unable to find capital for the project. A tough economy had closed the more conventional lending outlets. Healy remarked “the banks seemed paralyzed by fear.”
Healy discovered the SBA’s guaranteed lending program and The Boathouse received two SBA-backed 7(a) loans under the Recovery Act: $450,000 approved in June, 2009 and $639,000 approved in May 2010. After having doors shut in his path, Healy said the process was “quick, easy and painless and approximately done within 60 days.”
Starting with just two employees, The Boathouse grew to 118 employees by the end of 2009. As the recipient of the 2010 Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine and winner of Best Outdoor Dining, Best Place for a Date Night, and Best Outdoor Views categories by Richmond Magazine’s Best and Worst of Richmond, the success of the Boathouse at Rockett’s Landing is flowing smoothly.
