Once upon a time, a young man dreamed of opening his own catering business. He knew this would be a difficult task considering that his resources were limited, but he was up for the challenge. With a lot of hard work, a commitment to customer satisfaction and a little help from the U. S. Small Business Administration, Martin Resnick turned his five man operation into a multi-million dollar catering enterprise. Today, Martin’s Caterers, Inc. is believed to be the largest social caterer in the United States, doing in excess of $25 million in sales annually.
In 1964, Martin Resnick went to the SBA seeking $15,000 to open Eudowood Gardens in Towson, Md. The location had a maximum seating capacity of 500 people and served approximately 50,000 people that first year. His staff was limited, consisting of himself and his wife, his mother-in-law, sister-in-law and a few close friends. As the business grew, additional temporary employees were hired. During that first year in business, Marty never drew a salary and kept his day job at a local retail-clothing store.
The community’s response was overwhelming and in 1966, Marty again turned to the SBA for financial assistance. North Point Gardens was opened in Baltimore with a $40,000 SBA loan. By 1969, there was a need to create a facility that would offer a larger seating capacity, known today as Martin’s West.
On average, every 5 years from 1964, Marty Resnick opened a new location or expanded an existing catering facility, bringing the total catering locations to 12. The company offers a variety of menus for everything from weddings and retirement parties to boxing matches and holiday galas. The company has grown from the early days of catering family celebrations and private parties to having the capacity to simultaneously serve 20,000 guests at its various locations throughout the Baltimore area.
Careful attention to detail and personalized service at prices that the average person could afford has been at the forefront of all Martin’s operations. This commitment to serve customers in the “Martin’s Manner” and only offering high quality products has drawn customers and necessitated the increase of employees to approximately 700 full and part-time workers.
