For companies going global, intellectual property protection can be one of the most time consuming and expensive barriers to market expansion.

In February 2013, 25 European Union member states signed a Unified Patent Court agreement, which most observers believe will lead to the development of a unitary patent system within the EU. At the same time, the EU Commission in March issued proposals to streamline trademark registration procedures. Both measures will significantly change how businesses can approach the European market from an intellectual property protection standpoint.

Denise Lane, Director of the Intellectual Property practice group at Preti Flaherty, will present on the realities of and coming changes in patent and trademark law in the EU. The program also includes a panel of Maine business leaders discussing their internal research, development and patenting process, as well as experiences in European markets.

Sponsored by TD Bank as part of the Central Maine Program Series.
