SBA Searches for Disaster Hero Nominations

ATLANTA – It is not often that we can take time to thank those who went above and beyond the call of duty, so that is why the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA), Office of Disaster Assistance – Field Operations Center East (FOCE) is proud to seek nominations for the national Phoenix Awards.

Every year during its Small Business Week, SBA showcases the efforts of people who through their selfless acts helped others to recover from the aftermath of a disaster. Candidates for the Phoenix awards are sought in two categories:

(1) Volunteer: A citizen whose efforts greatly contributed to the recovery of a disaster affected community. Someone who is not affiliated with any organization that decided to “step up to the plate” and provide help.

(2) Public Official: A public official whose efforts greatly contributed to the recovery of a disaster affected community.

A nomination package should include a narrative detailing how the person (citizen or public official) responded to the needs of the community in the aftermath of the disaster, the disaster event, as well as a biography and photo of the nominee. The submission of articles from newspapers and magazines is encouraged.

Nominations should be sent to the U.S. Small Business Administration, Office of Disaster Assistance-FOCE, 101 Marietta Street, N.W., Suite 700, Atlanta, GA 30303, attention: Michael Lampton, by the close of business on Jan. 25, 2010.
