BOSTON – The Small Business Administration (SBA) has named Archipelago Strategies Group the 2017 Minority-Owned Business of the Year for Massachusetts.

Archipelago Strategies Group (ASG) earned the recognition for its success as the region's leading minority-owned consultancy, specializing in multicultural marketing, advertising, public relations and community engagement. ASG helps clients succeed by bridging cultural-divides and connecting them to diverse audiences. In less than three years, ASG has built a portfolio of more than 30 clients, including major organizations such as the Massachusetts Health Connector, Cruz Companies, Boston Public Schools, and the Greater Boston Latino Network.

“Archipelago Strategies Group started in 2013 with one employee, serving small nonprofits,” SBA’s Massachusetts District Director Robert Nelson said.  “They have since expanded to a firm with six full-time staff and 20 subcontractors, serving clients in New England and across the United States.”

ASG’s Founder and CEO, Josiane Martinez overcame several obstacles along the way to building a successful company.  After studying communications at the Universidad de Puerto Rico, she moved to Boston to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams -- with little resources, no family or support networks. Josiane worked for several years with local non-profits and newspapers. She was later brought into public service by former Governor Deval Patrick and rose to the position of Executive Director of the Massachusetts Office of Refugees and Immigrants.  Josiane then took another chance by leaving state service to start her own business.

In addition to being a certified minority and woman-owned business, ASG also holds LGBT Business Enterprise Certificate from the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce – a new designation that hopes to open doors through supplier diversity opportunities.

Over the last two years, ASG saw revenues triple due to the acquisition of its first major government contracts.  During this time of growth, ASG has diversified its staff and their expertise to reflect the diversity of the communities they serve.

Josiane recently completed the SBA's Emerging Leaders Initiative -- creating an ambitious growth plan that will allow her company to create new jobs and opportunities in the coming years.

“At ASG, we are pioneers in the field of multicultural marketing, and it’s wonderful to receive this recognition by the federal government,” said Martinez. “I thank the SBA for this honor, which I owe to my amazing staff and also my instructors at the Emerging Leaders Initiative.”

Josiane serves on the Board of Trustees at Roxbury Community College and was recently inducted as a Corporator of Eastern Bank. She holds an MBA in Marketing from Simmons College.

The Minority-Owned Small Business of the Year award is presented annually to a growing business, with three years of success in sales and profits, increased jobs, an innovative product, and demonstrated potential.

Josiane will be honored at an SBA awards lunch along with the other 2017 Massachusetts Small Business Week winners at Granite Links Golf Club on May 2, 2017.
