BOSTON – BioSurfaces, Inc. has been named the winner of the 2015 Massachusetts SBA Microenterprise of the Year award according to an announcement by Robert Nelson, Massachusetts SBA District Director.

“The theme for National Small Business Week this year is SBA: Dream Big – Start Small”, said SBA District Director Bob Nelson.  “This theme fits so well with the award to BioSurfaces Inc. in the microenterprise category.  BioSurfaces is dreaming big and is developing life changing and innovative technologies with the goal of clinical trials and commercializing just around the corner.   We are proud to recognize Matthew and Tina for their very significant contributions.”

In 2003, Matthew and Tina Phaneuf teamed together to form BioSurfaces, Inc. in response to the development of several promising new technologies. Matthew began his research career in the vascular surgery research laboratory at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for over 15 years where he served as assistant director and helped to establish a small business research and development company called BioMod Surfaces.

Since 2013, BioSurfaces has utilized free counseling services from Massachusetts Small Business Development Center (MSBDC) at Clark University, who assisted them in strategic planning, projections for obtaining bank financing; and preparation of a business plan and pitch deck for the company’s spin-off of NuVascular Technologies.

Additionally, BioSurfaces has received over $6.6 million in small business grants and contracts through the SBIR and STTR programs awarded by government agencies including: the National Institute of Health and National Science Foundation.

The Microenterprise of the Year award is presented annually to a growing business that has used assistance through SBA loan programs, or has been a client of one of our SBA technical service providers; nominee has also had at least a three-year track record and 5 or fewer employees.

The company was nominated for this award by Middlesex Savings Bank.

“We are honored to work with BioSurfaces, Inc. and to have had the opportunity to nominate them for this award,” said Kathleen Maroney, Vice President and Manager of Government Assisted Lending at Middlesex Savings Bank. “The innovative medical care solutions made possible by BioSurfaces’ cutting-edge nanotechnology and the company’s contributions to the local economy and community are truly inspirational.”

Matthew and Tina Phaneuf will be honored at an SBA awards lunch along with the other 2015 Massachusetts Small Business Week winners at the Sheraton Framingham on May 4, 2015.
