RICHMOND, Va. – The U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2019 National Small Business Week kicked off May 5 with awards ceremonies in Washington, D.C. where national award winners, including National “Small Business Person of the Year,” were recognized and honored for their achievements.

Locally, the SBA’s Virginia District Office celebrates Virginia “Small Business Person of the Year” Roberto Ortiz, cofounder and CEO of AVMAC, LLC, at the company’s headquarters in Chesapeake, Va.

Founded in 2009, the Navy and Marine Corps aviation contractor has grown to nearly 400 employees servicing numerous government contracts. AVMAC is no stranger to awards, thrice featured as one of The Virginia-Pilot’s “Inside Business Roaring 20” honorees. Additionally AVMAC, LLC was awarded the SBA’s Virginia’s “Sub-Contractor of the Year” in 2014, the SBA’s Region III “Prime Contractor of the Year” in 2016, and received the Virginia Governor’s Award for “Best Veteran Hiring Practices” in 2016. This year, Mr. Ortiz was chosen as the SBA’s Virginia “Small Business Person of the Year” based on his exemplary leadership in both his company and community, giving rise to the creation of many jobs and a stronger economy in Virginia and elsewhere.

“Mr. Ortiz served our country honorably and took advantage of the opportunities in the U.S. Navy,” said SBA Virginia District Director Carl Knoblock, himself a Navy veteran. “He groomed his skills while serving, and when he stepped out into the next stage of his life, he took advantage of those skills and created a very successful business.  The great part is what he and his team do for the community in which they live by providing jobs and strengthening their community.”

National Small Business Week is an annual event dedicated to recognizing the nation’s top small businesses, entrepreneurs, small business advocates and champions from across the country. Every day, small businesses create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, support our neighborhoods and cities, and increase America’s global competitiveness.
