BELLEVUE - The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) 2016 Small Business Exporter of the Year is Dr. Yogesh “Yogi” Agrawal and Henry “Chuck” Pottsmith of Sequoia Scientific, Inc., in Bellevue, Washington. The company develops scientific instruments used to measure particles in water using laser diffraction and holographic technologies.

Dr. Agrawal is the president and Mr. Pottsmith works as vice-president of sales and marketing and they export to all continents and most major island nations.

The company exports to all continents, including most major and some minor countries.

“Sequoia Scientific is one of the many small businesses that are showing what hard work and dedication to an idea can produce,” District Director Nancy Porzio said. “Dr. Agrawal and partner Chuck Pottsmith took a single scientific instrument at start, and turned it into a successful internationally known business with many derivative products and new technologies. He is a great example of what National Small Business Week is all about: entrepreneurs chasing their dreams.”

Dr. Agrawal is an immigrant from India. He started his own business, like all other entrepreneurs, chasing the American dream.

Their first product was an instrument to measure particles in water using laser technology, developed with funding from the US Navy via a research contract. Since they started in 1995, the company has grown to offer a more diverse set of instruments that fill a unique niche and remain in the marketplace today without direct competition.

“National Small Business Week is a time to recognize the impact small businesses have on our country,” said Regional Administrator Calvin Goings. “It’s a chance to celebrate the dedicated, hard-working small business owners who are making a difference in their communities.”

Sequoia Scientific, Inc. scored high in the six judging criteria areas which include (1) increased sales, profit and growth of employment; (2) employed creative overseas marketing strategies; (3) utilized effective solutions to export-related problems; (4) demonstrated encouragement of other small businesses to export; (5) assisted other small businesses entering the export market; and (6) cooperated with other businesses in the creation of export trading companies and introduction of unique trading relationships, products or services.

Each year since 1963, the US President has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of National Small Business Week. SBA recognizes outstanding small business owners for their personal successes and contributions to our nation.
