Braintree-based Fireking Baking Company named 2016 Manufacturer of the Year

BOSTON – The Small Business Administration (SBA) has named Fireking Baking Company the 2016 Manufacturer of the Year for Massachusetts.

“Greg Acerra is an innovator in the baking industry”, said Robert Nelson, SBA Massachusetts District Director. “Because of Fireking Baking Company’s unique breads, Greg has been able to grow jobs in the commonwealth while providing foodie artisans all across the country with the best baseline ingredients to invent their own unique creations.”

A restaurateur, Mr. Acerra started Fireking Baking Company in 1995 out of the need for fresh artisan bread for his restaurant Tosca in Hingham. The baking industry was evolving in the mid 90’s and Fireking became known as an innovator in the baking industry, offering many different types of artisan breads.

Fortunately for Greg, the gas station across the street from the restaurant was for sale - so he purchased it and opened Fireking Baking Company and Bistro. Half of the building was used for the restaurant and 2 former service bays were transformed into a small artisan bakery for his restaurants. Within months, a 15 unit restaurant chain in Boston inquired about purchasing Fireking bread.  Word of mouth spread about the high-quality breads and Fireking took off and grew from a 2-man operation to a 114-person manufacturing operation in a 40,000 square foot facility, now distributing throughout the United States.

Because of SBA’s 504 loan program, Greg was able to move his operation from the Weymouth facility to a state of the art facility in Braintree to fulfill the growing demand for his products.  As Fireking began scaling up and settling into their new space in Braintree, sales began to reflect the business growth as well.  Number of jobs created grew from 71 in 20012, to 82 in 2013; then to 93 in 2014 and in 2015 Fireking finished with 114 employees. 

Since expanding, sales and profits have been growing steadily over the past 3 years continually achieving double-digit growth – with an astounding increase of 21% for total sales in 2015. 

"Through the SBA’s 504 program and in collaboration with James Graziano of Weymouth Bank and Barbara Arena of Granite State Development, Fireking Baking Company has been able to complete an expansion phase unprecedented in the bakery’s twenty year history,” said Mr. Acerra. “In three years, Fireking has doubled sales, added 44 employees and now operates out of a new, 40,000 square foot state of the art facility in Braintree, MA."

Fireking Baking Company was nominated by Barbara Arena, Vice President of Granite State Development Corporation.  

Fireking Baking Company will be honored at an SBA awards lunch along with the other 2016 Massachusetts Small Business Week winners at the Doubletree Westborough on May 6, 2016.
