BOSTON -  Stop and Compare Supermarkets, owned by the Calvo, Dominguez and Iannotti families, has been named the 2013 Massachusetts and New England SBA Minority-Owned Small Business of the Year, according to an announcement made today by Massachusetts SBA District Director Robert Nelson.

The selection for this award is based on the following criteria:  staying power, growth in number of employees, increase in sales and/or unit volume, current and past financial reports, innovation of product or service, and response to adversity and community contributions. Stop and Compare was nominated for this award by Katelyn Husereau of the Northeastern University Center for Family Business.

Stop and Compare Supermarkets is a family owned and operated neighborhood supermarket chain formed in 1996 that serves the growing Latino and ethnic population in the Boston metropolitan area and in other New England communities. The founders, immigrants themselves, have made their mission to provide “Diverse Food for Diverse Communities.” Since the company’s humble beginning in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Stop and Compare has expanded into new communities and ventured into new states.  The company is now a multi-million dollar business and has more than 120 full-time and part-time employees.

“We are thrilled to present this award to the Calvo, Dominguez and Iannotti families for their success with Stop and Compare and their invaluable contributions to our local economy,” said Director Nelson. “I have been fortunate to get to know Alberto Calvo personally through SBA’s E200 training program in Boston and can tell you no company is more deserving of this award. Congratulations!”

The Calvo, Dominguez and Iannotti families will be honored at a special SBA annual awards celebration that will be held in June.
