SYRACUSE, N.Y. – One local small business was recognized during National Small Business Week at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 19th Annual Small Business Excellence Awards luncheon in Syracuse on Friday, May 5th. Small businesses are selected for the Excellence Awards based on their company’s longevity, innovation, sales growth, increased employment, ability to overcome adversity or community contributions.

NY Small Business Development Center Corning honored Elmira Gymnastics Club and Fitness Center based in Horseheads with a 2017 Small Business Excellence Award. Laura L. Monichetti, owner of Elmira Gymnastics and Fitness Center, is a second-generation owner of an SBA/SBDC assisted business. During the 1980’s, Laura’s father, Dave Sherman worked with the SBDC for assistance with his business plan. The business grew from a small group of gymnasts to over 900 athletes involved in a variety of sports. The Elmira Gymnastics and Fitness Center continues to grow and is very important to the rural Southern Tier because it promotes healthy lives, employs 21 people, and its 1.7 million dollar expansion generates significant income for the local economy.

“The 19th Annual Small Business Excellence Awards luncheon gives us the opportunity to celebrate our business community leaders for their small business successes,” said Bernard J. Paprocki, SBA Syracuse district director. “Entrepreneurs find success not by avoiding failure but by dreaming the impossible and taking chances. From Main Street stores to cyber merchants and all the companies in between, small businesses keep our economy innovative and vibrant.”
