BOSTON – Elizabeth Garlow, a Business Development Officer at ACCION USA, has been named the 2012 SBA Home-Based Business Champion in Massachusetts, according to an announcement by Robert H. Nelson, U.S. Small Business Administration Massachusetts District Director.

The SBA Home-Based Business Champion award is presented annually to recognize excellence and innovation within the SBA’s network of partners in Massachusetts. Ms. Garlow was judged on four basic criteria: volunteered time and energy to improve conditions for home-based businesses; engaged in entrepreneurial training, policy development efforts, or financial or business planning for home-based businesses; demonstrated interest in home-based business as an owner or former owner; and accomplished measurable results in advancing home-based businesses such as initiating public policy or expansion of a program. Ms. Garlow was nominated by Charles Smith, vice president and SBA specialist of Eastern Bank.

Ms. Garlow joined ACCION USA in November 2008 as the lead educator and technical assistance provider for the organization’s national financial education program. In addition to her regular duties, Ms. Garlow served on a team that designed and executed a seminar series model on business cash flow management geared toward the Latino business community, with a particular focus on home-based business endeavors. This concept, first executed in East Boston, has now been replicated in Jamaica Plain and is serving as a model for a state-wide effort in partnership with the State’s office of business and entrepreneurship. Prior to joining ACCION USA, Ms. Garlow organized financial seminars and provided technical support for small businesses working in cooperatives in Brazil and Italy.

“This award is meant to honor the enthusiasm and commitment of individuals working to advance home-based businesses,” said Nelson. “I congratulate Ms. Garlow on her accomplishments, and the SBA celebrates her success.”

Ms. Garlow will be honored at an SBA awards celebration along with the other Massachusetts Small Business Week 2012 winners at an event at Fenway Park on June 6, 2012.
