SEATTLE – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) 2017 Washington Small Business Exporter of the Year is Forest Marketing Enterprises, (Formark) Inc. in Everett, Washington.  Founded in 1991, Formark exports logs primarily to Asian markets.

Eric Warren, Formark President, was also selected as the SBA Region 10 Exporter of the Year among winners from the Pacific Northwest including Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. He is one of 10 finalists for the SBA National Exporter of the Year.

As the largest raw log container loading facility on the West Coast, Formark uses a unique machine to strip logs of their bark, loads them into shipping containers and exports them to China, Japan, Korea and Pakistan.

“With 95 percent of the world’s potential customers residing outside of the U.S., incorporating an export strategy is becoming increasingly vital for small businesses,” SBA Seattle District Director Kerrie Hurd said. “Formark used multiple SBA loan programs to meet different business needs. This enabled them to increase their exports and create more jobs.”

The SBA Small Business Exporter of the Year Award – part of National Small Business Week in May – recognizes small businesses engaged in exporting for at least three years. Winners must demonstrate significant increase in export sales, profits and job growth, creative overseas marketing strategies, encouragement of other small businesses to export and cooperation in the creation of export trading companies or introduction of unique trading relationships, products or services.

“Being an entrepreneur, I wake up every day and I’m a little bit giddy,” Warren said. “There was this idea that we had; and when things are different, they are scary. But we took this idea and pushed forward and once we got there, it was my dream.”

Part of what makes the company’s system unique is logs are shipped overseas on back-haul containers, which are typically empty when they return to their foreign port of origin.

By doing this, Formark increases the revenue of the freight companies and ports as containers are used to both import to and export from the U.S. This also decreases port congestion.

Plus, Formark buys logs from private tree farms and individual timber owners to increase local timber market activity.

“National Small Business Week is a time to recognize the impact small business has on our country,” Hurd said. “It’s a chance to celebrate the dedicated, hard-working small business owners who are using innovation to create jobs and make a difference in our local communities.”

A celebration honoring local SBA winners from Washington and the SBA Seattle District – which serves the state of Washington and northern Idaho – will be May 2. Other SBA local awards that will be recognized at the celebration include Small Business Person of the Year, 8(a) Graduate of the Year, Family-Owned Business of the Year, Encore Entrepreneur, Financial Services Advocate of the Year and Small Business Advocate of the Year.

Each year since 1963, the President has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of National Small Business Week. The SBA recognizes outstanding small business owners for their personal successes and contributions to our nation.
