Mark Eggen, owner of the local restaurant chain Hop Jacks, was named the 2015 state of Washington Entrepreneurial Success winner by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Seattle District Office at an awards gala at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Wash., on April 30, 2015.

Eggen owns nine Hop Jacks locations within the state of Washington with more expansion plans in the works.

Hop Jacks was judged in multiple categories, including innovativeness of product or service offered and response to adversity and contributions to community-oriented projects.

Eggen said their biggest response to adversity came with opening a restaurant, one of the toughest businesses to find success in generally, in the middle of the country’s recession.

District Director Nancy Porzio said Eggen is a shining example of how hard work, dedication and commitment to a dream can pay off.

“Mark Eggen took an idea and within five years turned it into a multi-chain restaurant,” said Porzio. “This is what Small Business Week is all about; celebrating achievements and showcasing entrepreneurial spirit.”

Eggen also explained that Hop Jacks has a “Good Neighbor Fund” which takes 25 cents from every beer sold; the fund raised more than $50,000 last year that goes directly back into the community the restaurant serves.

Eggen said although he is the face of the award as the owner, he doesn’t want the credit.

“This award isn’t about me,” Eggen said. “This award is really for all my employees and everything they have done. They are what make Hop Jacks what it is.”

“National Small Business Week is a time to recognize the impact small businesses has on our country,” said Regional Administrator Calvin Goings. “It’s a chance to celebrate the dedicated, hard-working small business owners who are making a difference in their communities.”

Each year since 1963, the President has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of National Small Business Week. SBA recognizes outstanding small business owners for their personal successes and contributions to our nation.
